john digweed @ club escape / minneapolis pictorial | 36 pictures

holy cow. on the drive downtown i knew that being excited about the event was only going to give me dissapointment. i think this is the only time that i've gone out fully excited and then still be completely amazed by the music of the night. john digweed fully lived up to the hype and status that surrounds him. extremely moving, well chosen, and beautifully mixed tracks. i recognized one track of the night: Cassa de X - Elastic Reality, (cassa de x is half brian transeau, bt, and the other half is shaun keng collins)

for me, the night was a gamble. a $34 dollar gamble to be exact. but i went in with the attitude that many live sets and cds a djs produces don't do him justice when you're in the club. armin van buuren is like that. max graham is like that. so i figured that john digweed could possible be that way too. i mean, with such a following he can't possibly suck. holy shit was i blown away.

it's interesting to hear his style in person, rather than just another global underground or kiss100 set. you can really tell where digweed's influence meets sasha in northern exposure. and then see how their own changing styles reflect and grow to meet up into delta heavy. interesting, interesting stuff.

i definately don't regret the $34 price tag, though i have had better time for much cheaper. i think i'd find myself hard pressed not to pay it again if he were to come back for the same cover charge.

man.. besides digweed, desyn massiello played wonderful tracks as well. the type of trancey, electro house type stuff that i've been hearing alot of lately.

also, club escape is damn spiffy. extremely high class. andy if you thought that soundbar was highclass, escape is one notch above that. when you enter, off to the left of your person is the dance floor with bars on both sides. a nice square dance floor with the mainstage of attraction on the wall furthest to the left, right next to the vip sitting down area. off to the immediate right is a huge bar area and further through that area is another lounge area which over looks the streets of minneapolis below. escape is a beautiful club, and with their dress code many a beautiful people attend. plus there are dancers all night long.

great party. great atmosphere. great people. great time!

paul oakenfold + sandra collins @ the quest / minneapolis pictorial | 41 pictures

last night was extremely refreshing.. i don't think there's ever been a time when i've gone to a club and never felt like a had to wait through a dj before the next one got up on stage. all night was excellent music. and not just the music but the crowd was great in my opinion as well. at tiesto everyone was pushing and shoving and being assholes on the dancefloor.. last night people respected each other more, and joined together for the pure sake of the massive. at least, thats how i felt from where i was standing. i'm not too sure other people would agree with me since a helluva lot more fights broke out than what i saw at tiesto.

kid icarus was amazing.. i don't think the crowd gave him response he deserved throughout his set, but by the time he was done the crowd all fell suit. kid icarus played so many songs that he is known for, unlike last week at bad boy bill where he seemed a bit off on the style i know him for.

sandra collins surprised the hell out of me.. her set was very hard.. very powerful.. the last time i saw her at the quest back in october it was no where near the caliber of last night, and i hear that back a few months ago at the quest, again, she was terrible. whatever she did between now and then has worked out for the fucking better, my god. those tracks were amazing.

paul oakenfold.. oh... paul "i'm a dj" oakenfold.. his track selection was fantastic. a time machine back to the end of 2000. it was a godsend. on the reverse side of the coin: his mixing?.. at first it wasn't bad, hardly noticable.. but through the course of the night, he fucked up several times on the decks, and once was so obvious i'm surprised he didn't even make any gestures toward it. he just brushed it off and kept going on, like it was intentional. i expected a little more out of him, but i certainly wasn't dissapointed. weird how that works.

overall the night was fan-fucking-tastic. there was not one specific dj that made this complete, it was the combination of all 3 djs that kept me on my feet. excellent show. despite the cover tag being $30, it was WELL worth it.. WELL worth it.. $10 to see kid icarus playing his classic best.. $10 to see sandra collins amaze the pants off me.. and $10 for some excellent paul oakenfold style trance and a check off my wishlist.

christopher lawrence + dave ralph @ the ascot room / minneapolis pictorial | 23 pictures

man, this night was quite refreshing. dave ralph played a great set that spanned across a couple different genres. he played this one record that hybrid future sound of london's papua new guinea and another pumpin' record with tagline "violated". it was quite powerful. some guy was telling me it's on his 'resident alien' cd. after he finished his excellent set, andy and i ducked backstage, snapped that photo and i got my old love parade cd signed too.

christopher lawrence was equally excellent. man, he has a very interesting sound. i've never listened to him to much before. actually i think the only other time i've heard him was last year at spundae. good then, good now. since i don't listen to his stuff at all, it was all new to me ^_^.

good times, good times. can't wait for tiesto this thursday.

sasha @ sound-bar / chicago pictorial | 25 pictures

holy jesus.. sasha last night was simply amazing. in march, sasha performed quite well, but he blew that set out of the water with his involver-esq track selections. fitting for the involver release tour, eh?

involver was released in europe on monday. since i already had it ordered, i felt justified that i could legally download a bootleg so i could attempt to prepare myself for what might be heard in the clubs. involver itself is pretty solid cd. it features some solid remixes, which had been torn apart and put together all in a very similar style that pulls all the songs together into one solid experience. from what i heard last night, he mixed and choose his tracks for his set in that very same style. beautiful!

and much like usual, even though i listen to his most recent stuff so i can hear it in the club... that never seems to happen ^_^ he played at least 2 actual involver tracks. UNKLE - what are you to me? and felix da housecat - watching cars go by. i think that's quite commendable. rather than just tour his album tracks and basically just play his cd live for everyone, he tours the involver feel, the concept.. not the product. (directly)

it shows that his primarly art style is mixing records, not producing them. but also showing that producing records is more than just a solitary song or melody. it's a feeling. a state.

as an added bonus: i got him to sign my cd of airdrawndagger and gu013 cd2.. unfortunately i didn't get my copy of euro involver in time to get it signed.. sadness. so yes, sasha was excellent.. sound-bar, on the other hand.. well.. it has it's pro's and con's.

pro: the sound is amazing. never had i heard a place so clear and still be so fucking loud. my ears are still recoving at this very moment.

con: there's no wear to sit. yes, you're supposed to out there dancing and everything.. but once you get tired and your back hurts. where do i go?.. i ended up just livin' with it. you could pay the $75 price and have those couches in the vip area.. but $55 extra to sit?! jesus .. so you either have to dance or stand.. you can't lounge. you can't sit because the floor is soaked here and there from people spilling drinks.

con: there's basically just the one level. when you get in there, you're on the dance floor. and that's all there is. there's alot of it, but's thats it. and the dj booth is elevated about 3 feet up, and along the wall. that long wall surrounded on both side by the vip areas. so there's really only ONE vantage point to take pictures from.. the front. left or right, i suppose thats technically two, but if you look at those the difference between right and left, it's exactly the same picture, just different.

con: location. it's 4 blocks down the street close to 94 from spundae and i couldn't find any non-shady parking lots near by. i ended up just parking in the ramp where i park for spundae, so i had a little extra walking. and trying to understand homeless people at 4am when you are damn near deaf from the night of your life can be a little awkward. i think one of 'em asked if i wanted to look for a baby?

so... basically the sound is amazing, but thats just about it. can't take sceneriffic pictures, can't sit/relax.. i don't think i'd be so quick to go back there. but hey, it's in chicago.. not like i'm in the neighborhood, it usually takes something big for me to go down there in the first place.

April 25th, 2004

i've finally got around to actually implementing an idea i've had in my head for sometime.. install another movable type journal and then mod it to work for my picture pages.. and thats exactly what i've done. though, there's still a few things i plan to mess around with.. but the main design of the individual picture entries is quite done.. i don't think i'll be messing around with that at all..

so thats the good news - a new, better system has been set into place when viewing and updating my picture section.. the bad news - well i've got a total of 503 pictures for that section, and it takes quite a while to actually enter them into the system.. right now i'm up to picture 3000 of july 5th, 2003 .. which is around pic #224 or something out of 502.. it's going pretty slow too.. i've found a few shortcuts to get it updated quicker, but it still takes me about 2 minutes per entry.. mostly waiting for the page to build.. i spent all yesterday entering pictures after i finished with the style of the page.. but UGHhh... it's annoying..

oh well.. it'll give me something to do.. and i'm almost halfway done too, once i get around picture 380-ish, then they'll be actual NEW pictures that haven't been on the site yet ^_^. heh, i suppose after that's done, i can make another journal thing to update this page.. hurrah, then i'd have 3 journal.. personal / pictures / updates.. i'm so trendy.. that whole "after-hours" page is quite out of date now.. rest assured, i've got further design ideas for the whole picture section of my site.. one step at a time ^_^

dave seaman + phil k @ plush, tabu, minneapolis pictorial | 28 pictures

this weekend was pretty fun.. it was hyped and hyped and hyped, and everyone there loved it.. phil k played some excellent songs, and dave seaman was great in my opinion.. much like his recent global dj broadcast, he played intergalatic by matthew dekay v. beastie boys, that song is funny ^_^.. plus the record itself had a graphed-on image of the huge mech from the old music video... he also played grater by atomic right before intergalatic..

overall i was disappointed on friday.. i wish i would have known that dave seaman + phil k = phil k.. or maybe i just haven't listened to enough dave seaman.. i loved his solo set before the tag team remainder.. oh well.. i certainly got my moneys worth.. plenty of nice pictures, plus i got my melbourne global underground signed ^_^..

sasha @ visions, spundae, chicago pictorial | 41 pictures

Sasha was amazing, though not exactly what i expected. instead of playing the melodic beautiful harmonies that always stick with me, he played a more breaky style in tune with what i've heard of him w/ james zabiela. perhaps this was because he was in chicago, and the people there love shitty house music, he decided to play something with a lot of beats. oh well, it was still amazing ^_^.

besides "this beat's all over my body" i recognized one other track, and that was sasha's second encore, unkle's in the state (sasha remix).. a very catchy break track. sadly shpongle's dorcet perseption was not played, like he would have anyhow..

the night was most fun ^_^. i noticed mr. squirrel and princess rocking out to the sasha and i also met up with andy and kristen who said they were going to be there ^_^. this was their first time in the glorious spundae club. and also on the way out i was approached by another trance addict, dj2tka or tom, whom i talked with for a little while on the way to the parking garage. his lucky ass got his xpander ep vinyl signed, which i got a picture of the act ^_^.

and yes, i'm still too lazy to make a page for the images.. eh, just live with it for now

gabriel & dresden + james holden @ visions, spundae, chicago pictorial | 39 pictures

last night was quite amazing .. james holden played beautiful music that has scarred mine ears.. all i hear now is a high pitch noise ... though its not as bad as it was when i left the club ... ouch.. but, holden was golden.. and for some reason, james holden looks just like bill for gods sake.

after holden was the main event, though after the night was done it certainly didn't seem that way. gabriel and dresden's (mostly gabriel) set was interesting but overall lacking. it was great to hear all those tracks i've heard on their previous sets live and up close... for the first hour. i think about 80% of what was played was something i've heard before from them in some form or another. it was great to hear 'beautiful things' and 'as the rush comes' in a club instead of my computer.

the meetup beforehand was quite a treat. gabriel was saying that when he writes music he doesn't focus on melodies, but on the texture of the loop and also how for him its all about sound texture and moving from one texture to the next. and then later on it was 'enlightening' to listen and watch him do this live. unlike sasha how he tries to compound different levels of music during his sets.

he was also saying that when the whole idea of music notes is completely ignored when writing dance music. its far more technical and so forth..

meeting up with the 'trance addicts' w/ gabriel & dresden also afforded some company sitting around in the club waiting for the good music to start. i was talking with one of the guys during the local house djs opening set. i was reminded of back november for hybrid when it was stu, kristina, and i ripping on mason t's shitty set. this guy had this to say, "on the first day, god fucked up and created man.. on the second day, god fucked up and created house music" ^_^.. no shit. he actually hated gabriel & dresden last night ..

hehe.. the bouncer was making fun of one of the 'trance addicts' because he was wearing tennis shoes. "you usually wear tennis shoes to clubs?" "yes" "well don't"

mega lan ii @ luther college, decorah pictorial | 22 pictures

luther college in decorah, home to stu, holds one of the biggest lan parties i've seen, though that really isn't saying much since previous lan parties i've been to only include ones from p-ville.. in any event, over 130 students/people attended this gigantic party.. this is also the first lan party i've seen where console gaming takes equal if not more precidence over computer gaming.. very interesting..

on another annoying side note, i found pictures number 4300-4500 that i had put aside to add to my site, but only found them after going through them again and added less pictures than i originally intended, so eventually that'll be fixed.. probably when i get backed up another 500 pictures.. ha

on an even more annoying note, stu stiffed me when he went to perform with his band for a packed study lounge in his dormatory, so i was unable to take pictures, NOR hear him and his band..

sandra collins @ the quest, minneapolis pictorial | 17 pictures

even though i said going to sandra collins would be out of the question money wise.. i did end up going because i needed my coat from my house, and also sandra was free, and since i was going to winona in the first place, it would only cost a tank of gas to go, therefore making it reasonable.. so i did, and had a pretty good time.. here are the pics.. i also added a normal type of event page thing down on the 'tool' bar next to journal mainly for myself and stu to check dates

September 22nd, 2003

alright, i've finally done it... the photography page is now updated through today, it is completed currently, thank god.. i went through 548 pictures (and came out with about 60-70 good ones not including pictorials).. i should really keep up to date on that stuff rather than let it pile up.. oh well, i usually get more photos by going through in bulk, than singularly...

take note that the armin, micro and delerium are unavailable at this time, becuase i haven't made them yet ^_^ .. its getting a little late, so i'm out of time, this'll be a project for wednesday night, along with the other stuff on my list..

anywho.. enjoy the pictures ^_^ .. some of 'em are neat..

in other news, that events list continues to grow and change so check in on that frequently to see whats going on around the us that interests me... anime reactor is looking more and more tempting the more i seem to find out about it... kristina's appleton pals (ie liz & erin) are going to be there, as well as the brother's schrader.. so there are definately people i know that'll be there.. i don't see a downside to this opportunity... and chicago = mitsuwa, and chicago = visions.. plus, plus, plus, plus

most of these are still the same as before... anime iowa this weekend, so i'll be missing trancedence yet again.. but the first week of school i'll have my chance to see maytag live finally... his melodic and energetic trance stylings fill me with love... but slightly before that is armin, teh fucking man, van buuren is visions.. man that is going to kick some fucking ass.. and then 2 weeks after that, i finally get to see dj micro in person, after being a slight fan for quite a while... and then a little later on down life, Ferry Corsten.. live at the quest.. with dj rap as well... holy god, i finally get to see this legend on stage as well... i am full of happy for these upcoming events.. yippie.. and Paul van Dyk is supposed to be at Pure sometime in october.. hoorah!!!

August 17th, 2003

stu and i go fishing falls creek pictorial

on this wonderful saturday afternoon, stu and i journeyed north... past his work in hugo.. past kristina's home... further on and on to the outskirts of forest lake... though there was an initial problem that i seriously wished i would have thought of ...

my camera's batteries began the day at 2% health... they were dangerously low.. so, for good measure, we bought some rayovac AA batteries at the bait shop... WHAT THE FUCK!!!! not until today did i know HOW much difference the quality of batteries makes in today's world... if i had only charged my sony batteries for an hour, they would have lasted longer than the 4 fucking NEW batteries we bought... i was able to take 70 total pictures.. but what in the fucking hell... just turning on my camera must have taken up 5% of battery power... the measily 2% remaining on my sony batteries lasted the same amount of time as each set of new rayovac... i need to go to sony.com and buy another set of those batteries because they are amazing...

besides that revelation of modern day living, the bugs were relentless... some huge goddamn ASS bug bite my on the ear and the shoulder and it fucking hurt.. the whole day i was doing nothing but complaining, sorry about that by the way.. on the outside i may have been complaining but on the inside i was in awe with the nature around us.. ^_^ .. it would be a VERY hard choice if their was a decision to destroy the nature of the world to rid ourselves of fucking insects, or to keep it because nature is beautiful... well some nature i'd destroy for the sack of annoyance, but nothing around the area we were today...

that really fucking pisses me off that my ALL my batteries were completely depleted when we reached wisconsin... gawd.. that train bridge was beautiful...

anyways, i also added some more pictures a couple days ago, as well... and i'm still kinda messing around w/ the code for this pictorial... i suppose i could make the armin pictorial, even though my pictures are terrible compared with josh grubbs pictures.. ugh... maybe if i had a company pay me to go to the quest, hang out with the djs, have backstage rights, and be given a multi-thousand dollar camera to use there, my pictures would kickass too...

hmm... perhaps rayovac had something to do with the blackout ........ fuckers..

-- Dyre

August 10th, 2003

armin van buuren @ the quest, minneapolis

armin fucking rocked my world ... one of the best experiences at the quest.. made better with the company i was with ^_^ ... armin played some recognizable tracks that even i knew... i guess my knowledge on this stuff is improving as of late thanks to mercuryserver.com and djmixes2k.com ... and thanks to dj wong for pointing me in that direction...

pictures will be up once i come up with a new design for the pictorial pages that i can use in popup windows.. the armin pictures are ok, there are a few gems, but mostly redundant pics you can see from previous pictorials... kind of a bad spread, but armin @ spundae will fix that ^_^ ...

final fantasy crystal chronicles gameplay diary

finally.. an rpg that i can actually get into and play forever... the world has been so dry lately with final fantasy x 2 and unlimited saga ... i haven't been involved in a game since the legend of zelda back in february.. and surprising enough ffcc is an action rpg of the zelda variety.. go figure.. squaresoft still has final fantasy xii to debut at the tokyo game show come september, but the plan on making it "completely different than any previous final fantasy"... ugh... not this again.. you already screwed up final fantasy xi, don't you ever learn ?

now if i could figure out how to make multi-player work, people wouldn't have to watch just me play.. they can watch kristina and me play ^_^

site work..

i've added some semi-recent reviews that hadn't been put in that section... mostly stuff off the spamm forum and archived news...

-- Dyre

August 7th, 2003

site update...

the photo section is completely updated through 5 minutes ago.. which is good ^_^ ... the life of my camera is fully documented enough...

in other site news, now that i've finished that whole process its time to fix the site links, because they are in a terrible spot.. ugh... annoying.. and the photography section only really needs 2 links.. pictures, and club pictorials.. and the daily section also needs to change to 2 links.. updates and journal... of course, i've done no work on the journal... lemme show you my to-do list

1) email platteville work, and probably start doing that, which'll take up time...

2) work on spamm advertisements, must be done before anime iowa so we can advertise AT anime iowa..

3) work on my website

4) start up my paper comic ... bah, who am i kidding about this one... i don't have that kind of freetime at the moment.. though i should probably make up the comic section to this website.. it'd probably only take 2 or so hours... not all that hard...

5) figure out movable type, and create my journal .. yes... this is one of the high points on my list because that'll add alot of content without a lot of work ^_^ ... though making the journal design may take a little longer.. i know what i want it to look like, but then i'll hafta code completely in css... eep... at least, thats my understanding...

well anyways... its time for Flcl on cartoon network ... ja matta ne

-- Dyre

August 3rd, 2003

site work...

i've been trying to work with movable type to add on a journal rather than update inside this confined space... though, i'm not sure how much free time i'll have to mess with...

in the mean time, i plan on adding a photography journal so random photos have a home on this site.. that'll appease both serious photos, wacky photos, and personal photos.. club photos will still be off to the side as their own pictorials, but they'll be links in the photo journal to that page... blah blah, so on and so forth...

August 2nd, 2003

hey lets look at the future...

aug 9th, 2003 - armin van buuren @ the quest, minneapolis

armin's first visit to minneapolis... kid icarus and jack trash are opening the night with their signature minneapolis styles

aug 22nd, 2003 - trancedence @ inferno, madison

unfortunately i still cannot attend a trancedence.. this time because of the next event on my little list.. which is a very good reason..

aug 22nd-24th, 2003 - animeiowa2003, cedar rapids

the big one ... last year we had a blast, we had a great party and i met the greatest person on earth ... this year, the core of spamm will be there in full force, which means the potential for crazy drunken fun and mayhem.. lets the good times roll.. whee

aug 31st, 2003 - armin van buuren @ spundae, chicago

the second time this month that he'll be in the area, and the third time in the past couple months that he'll be at spundae, which is interesing... the trance addicts are going out with armin for dinner on friday night, heading by dj seneca... and speaking of seneca, he opens for armin for 3 hours.. and then its 3 hours of armin ...

sept 3rd, 2003 - dj maytag / exposure @ club magestic, madison

this one may be a little risky ... no cover.. thats good.. but its on a wednesday night on the first week of classes.. thats not particularly good, though i'll need to check my thursday schedule... madison is only an hour away .. but if i get back around 3am.. thats not much sleep time ^_^...

sept 13th, 2003 - dj micro @ the quest, minneapolis
sept 14th, 2003 - delerium live @ the quest, minneapolis

the first weekend event after college would have started and i'll have to drive all the way back to minneapolis for these events.. it'll be my first time seeing dj micro in the flesh, after listening to his stuff for sometime... and delerium plays on a sunday night, so i guess i'll miss out on monday classes... it'll be worth it though ^_^ ... they are playing live, which means keyboards, synthesizers, drums, and so forth.. it'll be amazing.. fc kahuna also plays that night, and another group...

now, for a slight look at the past...

july 26th, 2003 - dj thee-o @ the quest, minneapolis

unfortunately, i missed this event ... i tried to get there as soon as i could, but i fell asleep before i could... but if i had... my god.. i can't believe that someone stole phenix m's records.. the mnvibe forum had been going nuts at the begining of the week with activity... crazy... other than that, i heard the night was great... ^_^

july 20th, 2003 - paul van dyk @ pure, millwaukee

the event was cancelled, which helped me out that weekend... i didn't need to drive anywhere, but then it was rescheduled to july 29th.. a tuesday.. that sucked.. there was no way i could get those days off work.. its not like school that i can just skip and have no consequences... pvd cancelled the event because of a severe case of food poisoning.. poor guy... why is it the heavy illnesses for dj's is food poisoning.. even Sasha had food poisoning when he was here a month ago... but the reschedule date was then cancelled because they double booked him... so now its on for october sometime... much more managable in my situation.. i can't wait...

july 12th, 2003 - jimmy van m, john debo @ spundae, chicago

this was just too damn far away from minneapolis to attend ... i think i'd be best if i only attended spundae events when i'm down in platteville.. or if Sasha is there... i don't know about paul van dyk, though.. i really don't know ... hopefully i won't be faced with that decision... though, i'm sure i will...
